HITOSHI Okamoto

Name: 岡本仁志 | HITOSHI Okamoto (Guitarist, also an independent artist under GIZA studio)
Birthday: 1976.6.12
Hobbies: surfing net
Strength: a heavy sleeper, and always in good health
Character: taciturn (in high school) but he has his own unique views on music

Trivia: Okamoto graduated from the engineering faculty of Doshisha University and when still in school, he sent a demo tape to BEING (a Japanese music company) and later signed up a contract. Besides being a guitarist, he is also MC for the music radio programme 'PASTIME PARADISE'. As an independt artist, he records and produces all his songs at home in his own studio called 'Okamoto Lab'. In acknowlegdment, he never forgets to thank the rest of GC members for their continuous support. He wrote a song for Mai Kuraki in 05 and in MFM interview, Mai commented that Okamoto is a mature and deep person, although the rest of GC might not agree so lol. (-thanks to k for some of the information written here.)

On Stage: Okamoto is kinda... cute lol, in a child like way. In all of the concerts so far (except the first one), you'll see him perform a solo cover for GC. His interpretation is very different from Yuri's and both are worth a listen! And to some extent, he seems to evoke laughters from the audience whenever he opens his mouth. (note: merely OPEN, no sound yet)

heavenlypigsty: I'd like to call him 'mochi'. Judging by his look you'd think he's still in his teens (no offense! Mochi, that only proves how much we envy your youth!) His singing is nasal and more folk-style and I find many of his album songs quite soothing =D

HIROHITO Furui

Name: 古井弘人 | HIROHITO Furui (Arrangemnt, Keyboard)

Inspiration: K-1 candidate Michael McDnoald. His performing style(rather wild and passionate btw) is inspired by Michael's boxing matches.

Trivia: Rumor has it that during one concert, Furui was so excited he broke the keyboard. Furui is GC's leader and the saying is that he had the vision to form a new band and started auditioning for a vocalist. At that time, NANA and Okamoto already established a name for themselves in the industry. Yuri being the newbie was the last to join the band and she could sing AND write. Well, the origin is rather unfounded. That makes Furui somewhat equivalent to Dai, the leader of 'Do as Infinity' (If you know the story). However we do know that GC members met each other when they were recording songs in studio.

On Stage: The wild beast in action. 'I'm Furui and am high high high'. Crazy and Passionate. That sums it all.

Nick: God-hand (the way he plays the keyboard and how he brings music to life)

heavenlypigsty: Furui is a veteran arranger who's been working for various GIZA artists and knows the music biz like the back of his hand. Being the old one in the band, his position as a leader brings a lot of confidence and assurance.

AZUKI Nana

Trivia: Azuki NANA's real name is 菅谷绘里(Sugadani Sato) and we've been guessing about her age to no avail. You can often spot her wearing a silver cross necklace (Christian?). She likes to bully Okamoto (erh... seems everybody likes to bully him). NANA provides lyrics for Okamoto's independent albums and also lots of artists under GIZA studio. The main reason NANA joined GC was she fell in love with Yuri's voice and she calls Yuri by the nick 'Yurippe'. NANA and Yuri are close friends in their private life.

On Stage: NANA has that classic elegant expression when she's paying keyboard. As opposed to Furui who also plays the keyboard but more focused on synthesisers and erratic background sound, NANA is in charge of main melodies. Her keyboard talent carries heavy weightage in two songs 'Mizu nai hareta umi e' (the sunny waterless sea, from album 'First Soundscope') and 'Towa wo kakenukeru isshun no bokura' (we who passed the instance of eternity, from album 'Crystallize').

Lyrics: Azuki is famous for her poetic lyrical compositions which tend to border on themes related to death, fickleness and solitude. She also published a photography+anthology titled '80,0' featuring 80 poems and her photography work. Nick: Azuki(as a pun, which means 'bean' in Japanese), NANA-chan

heavenlypigsty: NANA is a rather established lyricist for GIZA. She's famous for her unique poetical writings which could be hard to decipher at times. Personally I think she's a very smart and energetic person who has a mature outlook in life. There's a lot of grace in her as well.

NAKAMURA Yuri

Trivia: Yuri is a big fan of classic music. Her favourites are Chopin and Tchaikovsky. Yuri's personal fav song is "Mikansei na neiro"(incomplete tone) and she composed 'Yume mita ato de'(after waking up from a dream) when she was still in high school. Her singing styles are influenced by western and european bands, one of which is the Cranberries. Yuri composed all the songs for GC. Azuki NANA (GC's lyricist) calls Yuri by her nickname 'Yurippe' and in NANA's impression, Yuri's like a small animal who can't stop eating!

On Stage: Yuri is perfectly lady like and don't you expect her to do crazy things on stage. She has a powerful resounding voice (one of the best in Jpop) and although there're slight imperfections in toning, you'll sure forgive her for that.

Nickname: Yurippe, Uta Hime (diva)

Quote: "To create something is to express that purest piece of our soul with overflowing emotions!"

Instrument: Yuri is the vocalist and she doesn't play any instrument on stage, except for one occasion she uses Tambourine for the live version of 'Mysterious Eyes'(secret arrangement). However she does play piano and sing at the same time for several guest appearances.

heavenlypigsty: Yuri has a sonorous voice which's very unique among female Jpop artists. At first I think she sounded more like a boy, crispy, bright and cheerful but over the years, she developed a more feminine, deep and mature vocal that stretches over a wide range. She's a very talented composer as she writes all the songs for GC. The reason I'm attracted to GC is mainly coz of Yuri =D Special existance she is!

First of all, what's in the name?

In an interview with NACK5 [GOOD DAY RIVERSIDE], Yuri Nakamura(the lead vocal for GARNET CROW) remarked "First of all GARNET... it's a gem not so red as ruby, neither black. The centre of garnet has a deeper and darker red that vaguely paralelles a humbleness when we talk about music making. The subtle nuance in colour, or should we say the delicate harmony in music seems to call for something with deeper meaning. That's why we choose the word GARNET."

So there you have 'red not as red, black not so black. precious as gem or sinister as crow?' The bewildering contrasts can't be more aptly explained by the music itself. It's probably a big minus for those who don't understand Japanese lyrics. NANA (GARNET CROW's lyricist) tends to compose themes which boarder on sadness, betrayals, or even life and death. This should naturally bestow a dark tone on the music but on the exact contrary, the melody sounds cheerful and upbeat. You can take it as a radiating smile that masks a cringing heart. That's just one aspect of their music. From deep within their musical conception exudes a pure passion that's like singing your lungs out at the centre of the world. Now I've digressed... Whatever way you analyse it, the music speaks for itself.

ps. Initially they came up with 'GARNET' which sounded too short and abrupt. Crows are considered to be auspicious birds in Japan. Therefore they made it 'GARNET CROW'. Crow sounds like 'Kuro' ('black' in Japanese) so there you have a pun ^^
